Baselworld 2013: Patek Philippe seduces women with the reference 7200

By Joel Grandjean

Fifty percent of the Philippe Patek novelties presented at Baselworld 2013 were dedicated to women. The latter are increasingly present in the mechanical time-keepers universe. Favouring its original values, the Ref. 7200 Calatrava uses the ultimate simplicity and destitution: it only displays the hours and the minutes - which is restful - saving any additional indication. Only the passing time, exclusively combined with the timeless feminine classical. In the Bauhaus logic of “form dictates function”, this model of elegant sobriety confirms the Patek Philippe control of streamlining, pushed to its paroxysm. Extra-flat, its case with delicately rounded flanks, is equipped with right wristlet attachments, typical of the “Officer” style with screwed barrettes. Its cream dial and its finely grained structure with its velvety aspect, is swept with regularity by two gold pink “poire Stuart” hands protected by a discreetly domed scratchproof sapphire glass.

Its sapphire background plays transparency so that the captivating visual spectacles of a mechanical movement with extra-flat automatic winding resonate. A miniaturization feat, the legendary Calibre 240, a highlight of thinness with its 2.53 mm, plays with its off-centered 22-carat gold minirotor - the more dense and heavy it is, the more it reacts to the slightest movements of the wearer - while also accepting being finely manufactured in the direction of rounded aesthetics of a polish typical of Patek Philippe. For the women who are not put off by the micro mechanical language, here are some further details: extreme precision of -3 to +2 seconds daily, due to a Gyromax® balance oscillating at 21’600 alternations per hour and to a Spiromax® balance spring in Silinvar®, whose principle of handling the frequency with the help of asymmetrical inertia-blocks was invented by the manufacture from Geneva more than 60 years ago: 2.53mm in height, 161 components for 27 rubies, 48 hours of power reserve. As for the 18-carat pink gold case (34.6mm of diameter for 7.37 thickness), it is water-resistant to 30 metres.
